About

Learn to de-escalate aggressive behaviour and develop self-protection skills to ensure best practice when supporting young people.


Unfortunately, some children and young people become so overwhlemed and distressed by the world around them, it can lead them to display aggressive and violent behaviour towards their parents, support staff or school staff.

In this course, participants will learn several different models of de-escalation, as well as non-verbal skills to reduce confrontation in aggressive situations. Alongside some self-protection strategies, last resort planning and breakaway technqiues for when faced with physical aggression.

Trainer Sam Harris has been trained by the GSA [General Services Association] as a tutor in physical intervention and breakaway skills since 2009. He has been CEDA's go to person for de-escalation for over a decade and is responsible for passing these skills onto staff and the parents he now works with. Over this time he has developed several useful models to utilise in a de-escalation situation and has a wealth of expereince in supporting young people at risk of displaying aggressive behaviours.

In the course you will cover:

* Understanding what might drive aggressive behaviours in children and young people

* Learn and practice several models and approaches for verbal and non-verbal de-escalation

* Learn how to recognise the signs of aggression and react accordingly.

* Create safety plans pro-actively and plan for last resort situations

* Learn some basic self-protection and breakaway strategies that are low risk to young person

Both parents and professionals are welcome and time will be spent to ensure all perspectives are heard and respected.
